We Will Miss You: The Ouststanding Achievements of Senator Miriam Santiago

"Miriam was the #1 student in her batch from elementary to college
In her last undergraduate semester in UP, Dr. Santiago earned the near-perfect average grade of 1.1. And she finished her 4-year course in only 3-1/2 years.

She was the 1st female editor-in-chief of the famous student newspaper, Philippine Collegian, thus shattering a 50-year old record of male dominance.

She was the 1st female to win as Best Debater in the annual U.P. law debate, where she was captain of the winning team.

She also held a campus beauty title, 2 times – as ROTC corps sponsor.

She finished her first semester in the University of Michigan with an A average. For the 1st time in the law school's history, a graduate student was allowed to pursue a special program.

She earned the degree Master of Laws after 1 year, and the degree Doctor of the Science of Jurisprudence, after only 6 months.

Miriam worked and excelled in all 3 branches of the government. She is also the most awarded public official in the country.

As a regional trial court judge, she became known as the "fighting judge" who implemented a no postponement policy. She had a case disposal rate of 50 per month.

In just eight months as the newly aggressive Commissioner of Immigration and deportation, her team was able to arrest 323 criminal aliens and big time syndicates, 241 of whom were promptly deported. This was a 474 percent increase over a similar period the year before!

After topping all the presidential surveys, Miriam ran for president in 1992. She finished 2nd in an election that was marred with massive fraud.

Miriam is hailed as the consistent-top performer during her 3 terms as senator (1995 to 2001, 2004 to 2010, and 2010 to 2016).

She was the 1st senator in Philippine history to decline a pork barrel allocation which she deemed unneeded and unconstitutional.

She was also the 1st legislator to expose building contractors who solicited public works projects from members, with a promise to give an advance kickback.

In the 15th congress Miriam authored 882 bills and resolutions. Despite her cancer, Miriam, as of June 21st last year, has filed 1,324 bills and resolutions in the 16th congress, a fifth of the total number of measures filed by all the senators.

Miriam only spent PHP 500,000 during her last senatorial run in 2010.
Miriam accumulated a total of 53,917,495 votes on her two presidential and four senatorial runs. This is equivalent to 51% of the population of the Philippines today.

In 2011, Miriam became the 1st Filipino and the 1st Asian from a developing country to be elected as judge in the International Criminal Court.

Miriam became the 1st Filipino to be invited to join several international luminaries like Bill Gates in the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) in Rome."
